HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENT.

BOARD REFUSES HELP. HAMILTON-MORRINSVILLE ROAD. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON". Tuesday For the second time representations made to the Government by the Waikato County Council for assistance to finance the purchase of materials and hire of plant in connection with the council's proposals *to level and straighten the Hamilton-Morrinsville Road at Hinton's Gully, thrge miles from Hamilton, have proved abortive.

In advice just received by the council the Main Highways Board states that th«* law does not permit the board to com bine with a local body in financing thf cost of such a work.

At the bottom of Hinton's Gully, at n depth of 70ft. below the level of the main portion of the road, four roads converge. These are the highways from Hamilton, Movrinsville, Matangi and Silverdale. The roads through the gully are circuitous and dangerous, and the work of improving the grade and straightening the thoroughfares would provide a useful occupation for local unemployed labour for many months About 22,000 cubic' yards of spoil require to be removed. The cost of material for culverts and hire, of plant is estimated at £BOO, and the council asked the Highways Board to pay half this -amount. In view of the board's refusal, it is doubtful whether the council will proceed with the work.
