WHEAT DUTIES AND FREIGHTS.
Sir,—Once more the people of the North Island have had it properly put over them bj the Wheat Board, in conjunction with Mr. Forbes. I have lived in three countries, and seen a good many laws come into force. But for rank class legislation I think the law that makes everybody pay the freight, on wheat to Lyttelton, and then to his home port, caps anything I have ever heard of. Why not make this wheat duty fair for everyone in New Zealand and let us all pay the same. The way it is at present, the South Island pays £2 a ton less for its flour, and reaps all the benefit of the employment it creates in manufacturing growing. As a matter of fact the duties we have been paying will allow all the wheatgrowers in New Zealand some £3 an acre rent for their land. How would it be if all the imported lemons had to pay freight from Tauranga, the sugar from Auckland, and the coal from Westport, to their point of consumption, besides the ocean freight.: Forward Auckland.
