VINES DEFEATS AUSTIN.

VICTORY IN THREE SETS.

Queues containing 2000 people waited all night at Wimbledon for the finals of the lawn tennis tournament.

This unprecedented enthusiasm was due to the fact that an Englishman was contesting the final for the men's singles for the first time for 10 years. Centre-court tickets were " hawked" outside the grounds for £lO each.

H. E. Vines (United States) defeated H. W. Austin (Britain) in the' final of the men's singles in three straight sets, 6—4, 6—2, 6—o. A Shaky Commencement.

Vines began the first set shakily, netting nearly all his ground shots. Austin was nervous but steady. Vines eventually dominated the set. In the second, Austin won the first game on his service and then Vines showed his real form. He went ahead in irresistible style, overpowering his opponent. He finished the match with a service ace, paralleling that with which be concluded his match against Crawford. Although below Thursday's form, Vines was infinitely superior all-round to Austin. In the semi-finals of the men's doubles, Borotra and Brugnon (France) defeated Allison and Van P.yn (United States). The Americans were erratic. Brugnon's artistry delighted the crowd. A tribute to the superiority of American women's tennis .was the fact that Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody and Miss Helen Jacobs, both of the United States, entered the final without the loss of a set. Miss Jacobs served strongly and chopped and sliced accurately, but she was worn out by Mrs. Wills-Moody's masterly placements and was soon vanquished. Mrs. Wills-Moody took her fifth Wimbledon title, compared with Mile. Lenglen's six titles. Details of Results. Results we're as follows i Men's Singles.—Final: H. E. Vines (United States) beat H. W.
