KXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
CROWDED HORSE-OMNIBUSES
The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July 3, 1882:
A correspondent caUsi attention to the crowded state of the omnibuses running from the city, more particularly on Saturday evenings. They are allowed to leave regardless of any conditions as to the number of passengers. Not only is it a g;reat inconvenience to the travelling public, but a cruelty to the unfortunate animals. Our correspondent asks if the police ought not to take notice of these infringements of the city regulations and if overloaded vehicles of every description, so prevalent as to become a perfect scandal. We think the inspector of carriages might devote sufficient sttenlion to this subject to secure a conviction or two which would tend to «heck the evil.
Our cablegrams to-day state that it- is fixpected that the reserves will be called out. ait Home to replace the troops that have been despatched to Malta in anticipation of military interference in Egypt being found inevitable. Lord Beaconsfield, it will be remembered, called the reserves out during the Russo-Turkish War, when it seemed more than probable that England would find herself involved in the struggle. Further detachments ol troops are being despatched from Britain to the East, and our latest advices state that batteries of artillery for use 13 Egypt are being sent to that countryThe Indian Government is getting ready a body of 10,000 Anglo-Indian troops f° r use when wanted. It appears that the Egyptian crisis is fast ripening, and this would seem to be the opinion of Arab* Pasha, who is reported to be leaving ligypt for Constantinople, no doubt for Iho purpose o:f consulting the Sultan as to what should be done in the emergencj.
