RETURNED SOLDIERS.

DANCE AT OTAKIRI

/r A successful dance was held at tho Otalciri Hall recently, under the auspices of the Whakataae Returned Soldiers' Association. " The back of the hall was draped with national flags, whilo greonery and ferns were arranged round tho walls. Old-time and modern dance music was supplied by Ciiarke's orchestra, and great enthusiasm prevailed over a waltzing competition, the winners of which were Mr. A. Sunkel and partner. /Among those present at the dance were: Mrs. S. Jones, Mrs. F. Woods, Mrs. J. Bennett, Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Evered, Mrs. G. Thorn, Mrs. S. Flavell, Mrs. Booth, Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. T. C. Smith, Mrs. F. Johnson, Mrs. De Laccy, Mrs. Jamie-son, Mrs. llallett, Mrs. A. Marx, Mrs. Guy Turn hull, Miss M. McCandlish, Miss A. McCandlish, Miss Pat Caldwell, Miss Anne Baxter, Miss H. Armstrong, Mrs. A. J. Evered, Miss J. Bryant, Misses Partridge (4), Miss G. Doneaster, Miss 11. Crcise, Miss H. Latham, Miss C. A meeting of returned soldiers was held !n the Annexe during the evening, at which the secretary, Mr. L. Wylie, outlined the efforts that were being made to assist the returned men. Mr. E. Newton said two grants had been made by the Auckland Patriotic Society to the association and as a result of the local efforts, subsidy had been obtained similar to one of the. grants, with tho result that unemployed returned men had been able to obtain work during- the stand-down ■weeks. ■ . .
