RACE BETTING.

THREE DIVIDEND PLAN

REMIT FOR CONFERF.RGE.

'COMPARISON OF PRICES.

VIEWPOINT OF OWNERS.

Ono of the matters to lie considered at-tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington this month, in which some interest is being tnken, is a proposal by the Tnranaki Jockey Club that in races with more than nine starters there should be there dividends, on the basis of 70 per cent., 20 per cent, and 10 per cent. The remit lias been discussed by the committee of tho Mnnawntu Racing Club, whose secretary, Mr. V. T. Dibblo, lias analysed dividends returned at past meetings of the club and finds that the scheme might well provo highly attractive to- investors. The following comparison of dividends under the present 75 and 25 per cent, system and those that would be paid under tho new scheme was submitted: — Old Rate:—£s 0s 6d, £1 7s. New rate:—£4 14s, £ls Is, £1 .12s. Old rate:—£2 14s 6d, £6 10s 6d. New rate:—£2 lis, £5 4s, £2 4s. Old rate:—£3, 15s 6d. New rate:— £2 16s, 12s, 8& In tho case of tho third comparison

the second favoutito was tho winner, ' 1 lac favourite was second and tho third favourite third.

Opinion in Auckland inclines to tho belief that while tho proposal may appeal to casual investors it will not find the support of owners and trainers, with: whom racing is more or less a vital busi-, ress. These men bet on horses whicbi they consider have good winning chances ajid in most cases it is safe to say thatthey would rather carry on under the present system. With three dividend? the winning price would bo reduced 5 per cent., and most investing owners would prefer to take the longer odds for winning rather than shorter ones under a systeß that would save them something if their horses ran third.

The three dividend system was tried by the Oamaru Trotting Club, dividends beittj returned in the proportion of 50, 30 aid 20 per cent, which did not find favotr with i

Advice received in Wellington from the former Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan Mates that his throe horses ire making splendid progress at Randwick. Waratah is the most forward of (hem at present, but Cockpen is also in good nick, and Lavington is steadily rounding into racing shape. Both Waratah/and Cockpen were started at 3!osehill last Saturday and each should benefit considerably as a result of tho race.

West Dome, who won two lack steeplechases at .Wellington a year ago, is still running out on hia owner's station in Southland. Ho is being given everj opportunity to make a good recovery from the injury which necessitaied his retirement from the irack.
