HEAD STRIKES POLE.
CONSTABLE SERIOUSLY HURT.
LEANING OUT OF TRAMCAR
SAVED FROM FALLING BY FRIEND
An unusual accident occurred on a citybound tramcar in Hobson Street yesterday afternoon, when Constable R. Wearing, of 98, Summer Street, Ponsonby, received injuries as the result of striking his head on a tramway centre-pole. Constable Wearing and Canstablo F. A. Drew were standing on the front platform of the tramcar. When near the Trades Hall the former put his head out of the' right side to look at the destination sign on the car. The car was travelling at about 15 miles an hour, and the constable's head came in violent contact with a centre-pole. He was rendered unconscious, but was prevented from falling from the car by his companion, who caught hold of him. Constable Wearing was taken to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John ambulance. His condition was stated last evening to bo fairly serious.
