STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

STATE LOANS AND BANKS SOUGHT

Although conditions generally in tho investment market on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday were less activo there was no slackening in support for Government loans and bank shares. Few holders quoted in the gilt-edge section, while buyers maintained the previous day's bidding. A rise of 2s 6d was recorded in 1937 5£ February stock on sale at £IOO 7s 6d. In local body debentures two parcels of Auckland Harbour Board, 1961, 5$ per cents., were secured unaltered at £9B 10s.

Active dealing was registered in tho banks group in Commercials of Australia, which changed hands four times a penny higher at 14s, at which price further supplies were available. New South Wales were roleased at tho current prico of £25 10s and subsequent offers of £25 failed to attract holders, who withdrew. New Zealands, after dropping 3d on sale at 425, moved favourably, offers firming 3d to 42s 3d. Holders quoted a similar amount firmer than the previous day at 42s 6d. Unions were vainly sought 6d better at £6 17s. Late rates were maintained in insurance, but support for New Zealands, which were dono unchanged at 38s, was a shade easier at 37s 6d. South British were taken again at 51s, after which holders quoted further supplies 3d easier than tho previous day at 51s 9d. Buyers continued to offer 50s 9d.

In other sections variations for the most part were of a minor nature. Buyers' limits were raised 5s to £4l 5s for Colonial Sugars, but holders withdrew after quoting £42 at the early call. Support for New Zealand Farmers' Fertilisers was 3d stronger at 12s 3d, holders maintaining their price at 14s. Taranaki Oils lost further ground in dealing at Is 3d, a fall of ljd, and holders were willing to place more at Is 4d, a concession of 3d on early quotations.

Inquiry continued to cover a wide range in mining, but rates showed little movement. The only dealing was in Golden Points, which were done l?d dearer at 7d.
