HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. UNSETTLED, . WITH RAIN. The following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening:—The tropical cyclone is stili operating in the north and is one of the most intense storm systems experienced iti recent years. Expect further unsettled weather with additional rain, especially in northern and east coast districts, followed by a gradual improvement in conditions. Southerly to south-easterly winds, strong to gale, decreasing. Rough to heavy seas on the Last Coast. Local outlook: Cloudy and unsettled, with further rain, but improving gradually. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.50 in. Midnight, Wednesday .. .. 2.3.70 in. Temperature in shade yesterday (fo midnight)— Maximum, C4deg.; minimum, SSdeg. GOVERNMENT REPORT. Ihe Government meteorologist reported last evening as follows:—The northern cyclone has been moving in a southerly direction, and is now centred near Cape Maria Van Diemen. Another slight westerly depression is crossing the southern portion of the Dominion. Indications are for north-east to south-east winds about and north of Cook Strait from strong to gale force and gradually becoming more southerly; elsewhere, southerlies prevailing and freshening. Seas heavy north of Castlepoint and becoming rough north of Farewell Spit and Kdikoura; moderate thence southward. In the eastern Tasman Sea south-east to southerly winds, from strong to gale force in the northern portion, with rough seas. Winds moderate in the southern portion, with moderate seas. The weather will be mainly fair, but with some scattered showers in the southern half of (ho South Island; elsewhere dull and misty with rain. Heavy falls are likely from Nelson and Marlborough northward, with some flooding in the Auckland and Hawkc's Bay Provinces. Temperatures becoming cooler. RAINFALL RECORD.
