RIOT LOSSES IN CITY.
CLAIMS AGAINST COUNCIL LIABILITY DISCLAIMED. Claims arising out of damage'and loss caused by the rioting in Queen Street on the evening of April 14 were received by the City Council at its meeting last eveni«g. Mr. 11. Hope submitted a list of goods to the value of £27 Is 2d, looted from his shop in Queen Street between the hours of 9 and 10 o'clock. He said he held the council responsible fpr this loss and asked for an early settlement of the account], A communication was received from Mr. G. Bryan in respect of a recital given in the concert chamber of the Town Hall on the night of the riot. He said he had ample proof that many intending patrons were unable to gain admittance, thus causing a loss. He asked the council to grant him a reduction in the rental of the concert chamber on this most exceptional occasion. . . The council decided that while r&grctting these losses it could not accept any responsibility for them.
