FINANCES OF BAND.
PROBLEM AT WHANGAREI. DRASTIC ACTION NEEDED. REQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. [from our own correspondent.] WHANGAREI, Wednesday. "The finances of the band are in : such a condition that action of a drastic nature is necessary. to enable it to con : tinue," said Mr. R. K. Trimmer, when introducing a deputation from the Whangarei Municipal Band to the Whangarei Borough Council last evening. Mr. H. Flewellyn, who was spokesman for the deputation, said the council was approached to see if anything could be done to get the band out of its financial difficulties. The band is over 40 years old. In 1914 it was in debt to the extent of £BOO, which amount was liquidated by--1924. At present the band owed £240. Owing to the absence of any paying engagements during the past year there was no income other than the Borough Council's subsidy of £156 a year. The band committee appreciated the necessity for the council making a substantial reduc- ; tion in the subsidy in view of the present need for economy. In answer to a question Mr. Flewellyn said that :f the council reduced the sub- ■ sidy to £loo,a year and paid £SO of that . amount in reduction of the bank overdraft of £2OO the band could make arrangements to carry on. The band committee asked the council to take over, or provide for, the liquidation of the band's liabilities. Subsequently the council appointed a sub-committee to recommend a scheme as to future relations between the council and the band.
