DEATH AT 112 YEARS.
MAORI CHIEFTAINESS. EARLY HISTORY RECALLED. LONG LIFE IN THE NORTH. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WHANGAREI, Tuesday. The death occurred yesterday morning at the Takahiwai native settlement of Mrs. Wiki Pirihi, a Maori chieftaincss, reputed to be 112 years of age. Deceased was born at Whananaki in the year that the great chiefs Hongi and Waikato sailed to England to meet King George IV. She held high rank in the Whangau-whero tribe and she marriod the chief of the people who inhabited the southern shores of the Whangarci Harbour, the union causing great rejoicing. Her husband was a great friend of the first Nova Scotian settlers at Waipu and assisted thein considerably. Wiki Pirihi died many years ago and at Takahiwai there is erected a handsome monument to his memory, carved from a totara tree. In spite of her great age deceased retained great alertness and traces of the beauty for which she was noted in her younger life. At the time of her death five generations of the family were living. There are 124 descendants, including several great-great-grandchildren. A huge hui is being arranged.
