TRIALS AT EPSOM.
GOOD WORK PERFORMED. GREAT PARRISH GOES WELL. MR. PENALTY'S FINE TROT. BY ABAYDOS. The dirt track at Epsom wns in good order yesterday, when some fine work-outs were performed by horses engaged at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. The best efforts were recorded by Great Parrish, Row-pie's Guy and Mr. Penalty, who was worked nt tho trotting gait. Conceding 60yds. start to Kewpie's Guy (W. Willetts) and Real Girl (E. N. Kenliorley). Great Punish (J. S. Shaw) got up at the end to finish on terms with Kewpie's Guy, and run [lie journey in 4.30. Kewpic s Guy and Real Girl wero together at the milo in 2.21 J, but as they ran to tho mile and a-half in 3.301, Great Parrish. on tho outside, wns level with them. Two furlongs from home Real Girl dropped back, and when her sulky collapsed entering tho straight she was pulled tip. Great Parrish and Kewpie's Guy flashed past tho post together, running tho last half in 1.-IV. Kewpie's Guy, who ran tho full distance in 4.35, went snioo:hly, and appears none tho worse for her hfird race at Te Aroha. Great Parrish's effort was impressive. Mr. Penalty (J. S. Shaw) trotted a milo and a-half faultlessly in 3.25{. He was accompanied by Warspite (W. Willetts), and | tr.gether they pissed the milo post ill 2.15. Stepping along in fine style tho pair came into tho straig'it together, but Warspito tangled, and Mr. Penally, going evenly, finished up tho last half-mile in 1.7}. Mr. Penalty's racing with the straits has by no means impaired his trotting ability. Carnui ?>nd Modern Light. Carnui (F. J. Smith) jumped away at tho two miles post and, reaching the half-mile in 1.13. was jo.ned by Modern Light (C. Smith). They paced steadily ovey the next mile in 2.23, wnen the pace was increased on the final section. Carnui held a slight advantage nt the finish in 4.45, Modem Light registering 3.32 1-5 for the mile and a-half. Tho track when this pair worked was not as fast as for tho later arrivals. Rey de Quest (J. O'Kane) and Mazda (W. Willetts) were clocked for a flying mile and a-qua iter in 2.50. Mazda led slightly at the end of six furlongs in 1.41. but in tho run home Rey de Quest was doing best and held his companion comfortably to show 1.9 for tho last half. Mazda was having her first work-out since racing at Thames, and she has brightened up as a result of tho respite. Carl Mack (I'. J. Smith), Margaret Wallace (E. G. Sandall) and Miss Joan Direct (C. Smith) went away in that order for a mile and a-half effort. The trotter was in fiont at the half-mile in 1.15, but just before reaching the mile in 2.23 he broke and Margaret Wallace assumed command. Settling down Carl Mack trotted solidly and headed Margaret Wallace near the post, to record 3.32. Margaret Wallace registered similar time, b.it was not fully extended at the finish. Prince Etawah (L. Laver) went out a few lengths in front of Auto Machine (A. Brown) for a mile and a-half work-out. He ran the mile steadily in 2.23, and then increased the speed. In the straight Auto Machine made a forward move, but Prince Etawah hung on well and there was little between them nt the end in 3.29. Auto Machine ran the last half in 1.5, Prince Etawah taking 1.6. Moko Girl (A. Dye) went away three seconds ahead of Kewpie's Triumph (K. Bell). Before half a mile was covered the trotter broke, but she was given tho lead again, and ths mile wns passed in 2.35. From there home she trotted very soundly, running the final section in 1.10. Kewpie's Triumph was not driven out, and registered 1.9 for the last half. Bingen Crest's Task. Bingen C'resl (F. J. Smith) worked several circuits unhopplcd. pacing with fine freedom. She. was not against time, but traversed the last lap at a 2.30 gait. The j mare should race well over a sprint dis- I tance at Epsom Cleao (H. Hendricksen) was given a use- | ful task over four circuits, without being ! fully extended. She paced smoothly and ! ran the final six furlongs at a 2.25 gait. j Cleao is lookin? in good heart. The two-year-old Nellota <L. Mitchell) j gave a pleasing display while running a I mile and a-half with Star Pronto (B. Dyer). The latter began slowly and Nellota led past the mile in 2.2-2. Three furlongs from home Star Pronto moved up and he had a slight advantage at the finish in 3.31}. Nellota ran the distance in 3.32, a fine performance for n two-year-old. Netherton (W. Willetts) and Worthy Patch (J. S. Shaw) started off to run a mile, but the latter tangled and there was no speed on to the half, where Worthy Patch had rejoined Netherton. Increasing the pace, the novices were shaping well, but Netherton left his feet at the (juartermile post, anc Worthy Patch finished by himself, comfortably, recording 1.13 for th* finnl section. Master Huia, who has joined A. J. Julian's stable, was allotted jogsring exercise on the sand track. Master Huia looks somewhat licht. in condition, and may reQuire time to utrike his riuht form. As Peter Pi-ate has again become sore, his owner, Mr. M. J. Moodabe, hns decided to give him a spell, and hns leased Real Girl. The latter is useful, and should race well when she strikes form.
NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE. TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP. The chestnut colt by Gay Shield from Shebang is at present being broken in by H. Hastedt and lie is a sedate youngster v.-ho is taking to his education very kindly. Ganpat did not return from Awapuni with the rest of P. 10. Pope's team, but was sent to Wanganui in charge of M. Hawkins, who is attached to Pope's stable. Ganpat will race at the Ms.rton, Egmont and Wanganui meetings. The Ellerslio horsemen 11. N. Wiggins and 11. Dulieu will be riding at the Marton Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, when Wiggins will ride Ganpat, Air Laddie and Right Bower, e.nd Dulieu will be on Arrowhead and Briat Boot. P. E. Pope lias broken in two rising two-year-old fillies. One is by Gay Shield from Lady Marie, the dam of Valmarie, and the other is by Leighton from Comedienne, thus a full-sister to High Comedy. Both have taken their early education in very sedate style. Mr. R. T. Reid's trio, Tea Trader. High Comedy and Royal Artist., are to go into retirement for the winter and it is possible that they will lie spelled on Mr. Reid's property at Hamilton. All three have had a fairly stremnua season and should benefit by a holiday. Unless present indications are altered Lapstone, who has been performing consistently well at country meetings in Auckland, will be taken to Hawera to compete at the E»mont Racing Club's meeting next week. Lapstonc will ae ridden in his engagements by A. G. Pa 'sons, who lias steered him in his recent successes. The two-yeai-old Jewelled Girdle is workin" regularly i.t Ellerslio but he is not bein" caTled uno-i to do anything very strenuous. Jewelled Girdle has grown very tall, and like other members of his fnmit.v, he may take tine to mature, fo that it is unlikely that 1. E. Thorpe will make any attempt to lurry his preparation. It has not yet been decided whether Speedmint will racf at the WniKnto meeting in Mav but as she has no engagements at the winter meeting at 1511orBlie.it is probable that she has finished racing for the season. Spec Iminf has done well this season and as she stays well she should develop good ha ndicap form next season. A young ho -se at Kllerslie who is showin'" signs of mprovement is the two-year-old Bri"ht Flower, by Illumination from Littlo Flower. Up to the present lie has not been serimslv tried but he has furnished l good deal lately and promises to develop into a solid stamp of horse. Bright Flower will b< kept going steadily and will make a etart'in novice company m the new Benson.
