The High Commissioner for Australia, Sir Granville Ryrie, presided at the British Empire Service League's Anzac Day; luncheon. Those present included Brig-adier-General J. H. Cannan, of Australia, and Lieutenant-Colonel Fitzherbert, of New Zealand. Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood,who commanded the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at tho landing, responding to the toast of those who served at Gallipoli, said the world provided no better examples of real democracies than Australia and New Zealand. They would never be right unless they believed their cause was righteous, yet their men gave their lives willingly at Anzac. knowing they fought in a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook the amaz* ing bravery of the 29th Division, but the Anzaes fought with almost reckless bravery. Canon W. P. Besley, formerly of New Zealand, preached at the Anzac Day, memorial service at St. Clement Danes* Mr. J. G. Latham, Commonwealth Attort ney-General, and Sir Thomas Wilford, High Commissioner for New Zealand, read the lessons. The latter was suddenly overcome by faintness during the reading and had to allow a church-warden to complete the lesson. Afterwards, Sir Thomas Wilford placed a wreath on the Cenotaph on behalf of the New Zealand forces. Lady Wilford, on behalf of the Victoria League of New Zealand, also placed a wreath. An impressive Anzac Day ceremony at the Cenotaph this morning was attended by local Australian and New Zealand residents.
