CAPSIZE OF FISHING BOAT.

JURY'S RIDER AT INQUEST.

THE NEED FOR LEGISLATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. An inquest has been held into tho death of Captain R. S. Halcrow and Mr. Alfred Allen, who were drowned as a result of tho capsize of a fishing launch in heavy seas on tho Waitara Bar last Wednesday. Mr. Allen was a fisherman and Captain Halcrow was master of the auxiliary ketch Kapui.

Deceased left Waitara en the Tuesday evening for a night's fishing from tho launch Swan, owned by Mr. E. Crabtree, of ElUiam. During tho night a strong north-east gale sprang up and about 10 o'clock next morning tho launch attempted to enter tho (river. Heavy seas were running on tho bar and the craft was soon in difficulties, being capsized by cross seas. Tho jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning and added the following rider:—"That the attention of the Marine Department bo palled to tho fact that fishing launches with open cockpits aro a great danger to those in charge of them and that legislation ho made to prevent such fishing boats from crossing tho bars of all rivers in New Zealand."
