SHOP GOODS STOLEN.

SEQUEL TO CITY RIOT.

TWO MEN REMANDED. EFFORTS TO RETURN PROPERTY. "This youth was in Queen Street during the recent/riot and stole articles from two shops, the windows of which were broken," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, when Mervyn Charles Dell, aged 18, labourer, pleaded, guilty in the Police Court on : Saturday to charges of stealing a pipe and tobacco worth 3s lid, tho property of J. W. Coleman, and a gold ring and a greenstone tiki, of a total value of £1 5s 6d, belonging to Arthur Gordon Taylor. Mr. Kelly added that accused was one of a gang of young larrikins, which was "terrorising" the Western Springs district. Ho was also to be charged with disorderly conduct and throwing stones in the district where lie resided. Counsel, in asking for leniency, said that when accused showed the stolen articles to his mother she made an attempt to return them. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Html: Sho may have tried to return them, but accused didn't.. Dell was convicted on both charges. On ono count ho was discharged and on the other ho was remanded in custody for a week, pending a report from the probation officer, Mr. W. 'J. Campbell.

Thomas Morning, aged 27, labourer, pleaded guilty to a clinrgo of stealing a wristlet watch and a ring, of a total value of £3, the property of some person or persons unknown. Mr. Kelly said accused was also in Queen Street, on the night of the riot.. When interviewed by the police accused explained that ho had picked the articles up in the street, lie had not deliberately stolen them from a shop. Later lio became worried over the possession of the articles and was taking steps to return them with the assistance of another man.

Morning was also remanded for a week to enable the probation officer to make inquiries. Bail was not asked for.
