SINGAPORE BASE.
PROGRESS OF WORKS. STATEMENT IN THE COMMONS. [FROM OUr. OWN" CORRESPONDENT. ] LONDON". March 27. Reference was made in the House o( Commons to the work on the Singapore base when a vote of £2.245,700 for navai works, buildings and repairs was being considered. Vice-Admiral E. A. Taylor asked the First Lord to give a full statement with regard to the progress of the works being carried out in connection with the naval base at Singapore.
Captain Wallace, Civil Lord of tha Admiralty, said the total cost of th® Singapore scheme was £7,750,000. The Imperial Conference of 1930, which considered the question, decided, owing to the financial stringency, to complete only those works comprised in the present main contract and such ancillary services as were absolutely necessary. This did not provide for the construction of dockyard workshops under the present vote, but the situation was fully realised by the Admiralty, and was at present, receiving the earnest attention of the First Lord of the Admiralty. The vote was agreed to.
