GIRL CYCLIST KILLED.

BOY RIDER THROWN HEAVILY. SEVERE INJURIES RECEIVED. [by telegraph.—own con respondent. J NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. An extraordinary accident with tragic consequences occurred at Auroa, 68 miles from New Plymouth, when a girl was killed and a youth gravely injured as the result of a horse shying at a road roller. The victims of the accident were: — Mary Ellen Horgan, aged 17 ..years,"fatal face and head injuries. James Williamson, severe head injuries, and in a semi-conscious condition. Miss Horgan was cycling along Skeet Road, which was under repair. Williamson was. riding a horse in. the' opposite direction. Suddenly the animal took fright a.t a road roller and shied. In its plunging the horse lashed out and hurled the girl and her bicycle about 15ft. Miss Horgan received face and head injuries, while Williamson was thrown heavily. The girl was conveyed to her home, where she received medical attention. She was then removed to the Kaponga Hospital, where the died in the evening. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Horgan, of Auroa, and was very popular in the district. She was a prominent hockey player.
