FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. WATERFRONT RAILWAY SCHEME. Tha following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 24, 1882: A series of singular .outrages are apparently now being instituted in this city, namely, that of tampering with the gas meter in places of public assemblage for the purpose of alarming or annoying the audiences, if not from motives of a more malicious nature. The offence is a very serious one. In England it has led to panics in halls, leading to loss of life. By an Act in force in this colony the offender can be dealt with summarily ana sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour without the option of a fine. The preliminary survey of the projected railway to the new township of St. Helier6 has been made by Mr. C. E. Cooke, C.E., who was formerly in the Public Works Department, and was engaged on railway work in the Middle Island. The proposed line is entirely free from any serious engineering difficulty and can 'be constructed without injury to private or public property, while it greatly enhance the value of the company's estate, and a large proportion of the land near which it will pass. The line will be practically level, and the curves of fair radius. The inhabitants of Parnell, as well as those of the neighbourhood of Hobson s Ray can, if they desire it. have a station for their own convenience, and if ft -iny time it should become desirable, additional stations can be formed at other points of the line. It is apparent that, by the construction of this railway the whole of the land alone the shore from the city to St. ITeliers Ray will, so as ready access is concerned, hecomfi available as sites for residences. We congratulate the numerous shareholders ol the St. Heliers and Norfhcote Land Company on the prospect, of a large iticreasfl in the value of their property, whicu must inevitably result from the opening of this line.
