WINTER CLOTHING.
BY A FAMILY DOCTOR
Although it vould be obviously absurd to dogmatise about the clothes one should wear in the winter, it is, nevertheless, wise to bear in mind certain general principles. So much, of course, depends on our work and on our own idiosyncrasies. Some people feol the cold so much more than others; and it is probably safe to assume that provided you are in good health the colcl docs not matter unless you actually feci cold. People whose work is out of doors and manual obviously do not require to be overburdened with a great weight of clothing. Let them wear sufficient so that while at work they are comfortable. But they must have with them such things as scarv;s, sweaters and overcoats to put on duri:ig rest intervals and during the journey home. These, and others who are liable to perspire, should wear some light form of underwear of a good absorbing material, e.g., wool.
Indoor workers should remember that provided their offices, etc., arc properly heated there is no occasion to put on extra layers and thicknesses of underwear in the winter. It is far better to have a thick coat and muffler which can be discarded when you are not actually in the open. For if you get too hot indoors from too much clothing you are all the more likely to catch cold on going out. Too much clothing, both because of its weight and becauso it prevents ventilation of th e skin, is very tiring for the body and enervating for the mind.
