WOMEN IN THE MASS.

NO CLOTHES SENSE. THE LATEST FASHIONS. Tho truth is—women in tho mass havo no sense of clothes at all. Otherwise, old and young females wear, to a woman, what they believe to be the latest fashion, whether it suits them or not, writes an English woman. A week or so ago a girl dined with me. Six months before that she also dined with me, and in extending the second invitation I wrote: " .And if you still have the black frock do wear it, for it was a nice frock."

Indeed, she looked very attractive in it on tho first occasion. >She is a blonde, about sft. 4in. tall, and the black frock had suggestions of the Empiro period, being high-waisled and hanging thereafter to the ankles. But when she arrived tho second time I could havo wept as I inquired sadly: " What on earth have you done to the frock ?"

" Why, naturally," she replied, ' 1 lengthened it. They'ro worn to the ground now, and they havo a bouffant effect on the hips. I couldn't possibly wear it as it was."

So one had tho forlorn spectacle before ono of an Empire frock trailing on tho ground, its character and line ruined, its owner i)erfectly happy 1
