DRAMA OF THE SEA.
RACE FOR MAN'S LIFE WON. How the British cruiser York raced against time and storm for 1000 miles to save a man's life was told when the vessel arrived at Plymouth recently. She was returning from the West Indies to Shecrness when a member of the crew, Ableseaman L. G. Tubby, was stricken with appendicitis. The ship's surgeon, helped by another officer, performed an operation, but complications developed, and it seemed that another operation would be necessary. The patient was gravely ill, and the strain of a second operation in stormy weather at sea might have ended his life. It was. therefore, decided to make for Plymouth at top speed. While the cruiser fought her way through terrific gales, which delayed her arrival by 30 hours, the patient hovered between life and death. On reaching Plymouth Tubby w'as rushed to hospital, where he was later reported to be out of danger.
