IMPUDENCE OF HOUSEBREAKER. With the remark tha f j the Judges marvelled at the impudence of Lewis Macfarlane, Mr. Justice Humphreys, in the Court of Criminal Appeal, London, lately dismissed his appeal against a conviction and sentence of 13 months' imprisonment passed on him for housebreaking. Giving judgment, Mr. Justice Humphreys recalled that in the premises broken into were found a number of pepperminttablets marked with two letters, ami a motor-car driving licence with Macfarlane's name on it. The police askew Macfarlane for an explanation, and his answer was that he had been at work in Kegent Street that night. But lie would not give the exact address so that the police might verify his statement. While ho was being charged Macfarlane was noticed to put into his mouth a peppermint lozenge, and in his pocket was found quite a good supply of those sweets all bearing the same maxk. _ Even then Macfarlane would not admit the crime, but swore that ho was drunk on the particular night. Ho had the audacity to assert that some ruffian had taken his licence and some lozenges, aiici left them in tlie house that was broken into.

The Court considered that Macfarlanf had been properly convicted and sentenced, and dismissed his appeal-
