TWO GHOSTLY FRIARS.
ARM-IN-ARM IN A LANE. HOLE IN THE GROUND. The little old world villago of Berrvnarbor, Devonshire, has been agog recently because of tho mysterious reappearance, " ghostly white," of two Cistercian friars. The last visitation was 011 the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany, when the brothers were seen arm-in-arm traversing a narrow lane near the rectory.
Tho rector described the whole thing as " rubbish " when he was interviewed, but his sceptical view was not shared by four maiden ladies who live near the church, and who are supposed by some of the villagers to share spiritualistic tendencies. They are supposed to have seen these friars, and accurately described the habit of the Cistercian order when called upon to substantiate their claim. They described their sweeping white habits, their white hoods, and their beards, and declared that the two ghostly visitants struck them as being particularly peaceful habitants of the other world.
The men, the two women are quoted as saying, appeared first of all immediately behind tho rectoy, and seemed to come from a hole in the ground. After a long look around they walked off, apparently deep in conversation. Their arms were linked, and witli solemn and stately step they walked into the night. This is not tho first appearance these monks aro supposed to have made—in fact, it is stated that they " showed up " quite frequently soino two years ago.
