To a meeting of the Papatoetoe WCT.U., Mrs. Long gave a report of the recent. Dominion Convention held ut Wanganui. She dealt with many important subjects. Among others, was the need of members' help in supporting the Bible in schools question, the need to speak out against gambling, the desecration of the Sabbath, also for stricter censorship of reading literature.
At the e'ghth annual meeting of the Athenian Club held at the Amateur Hall there was a large ami enthusiastic gather-in-r of members. The following officers vere elected for the coining season:— President, Mr. Wilfred Wright; vicepresident, Mr. C. Munro Emanuel; honorary secretary, Mr. T. J. Regan; honorary treasurer Mr. V. Trask; committee, Miss N. Kirkl'v, Miss U. Wilson, Mrs. H. Clark, Mrs. J. O'Shea, Mrs. H. Gilmour, Messrs. C. Anderson, P. Dawes, A. Boberts, W. Patterson and D. Middleton.
A social evening and dance was held in Daly's Hall. Takapuna, last evening in aid "of tie Western Area and Council of Women's fund. The organiser, Mrs. J. C. Blomfield. was assisted by members of the committee. The hall had been attractively decorated and one end had been set aside for those who preferred to play cards. Competitions were played and dancing was interspersed between items, which included instrumental, vocal and elocutionary numbers. The following assisted with the programme:—Mrs. Edmonds, Mrs. Melville. Mrs. Spiers, Miss Gla civs Barton, Miss Wrigley, Miss Daly, Misses F. and E. Johnston, Misses Taylor (2), and Mr. Trevor Blomfield.
A social to welcome the Rev. C. B. Jordan. MA.. 8.D., and Mrs. Jordan was held in the Glen Eden Methodist Church on Thursday evening. The Rev. Angus Mcßean presided. Mr. Jordan has taken over the charge of the Henderson circuit. Addresses of welcome were given bv Mr. J. M. Tregaskes (church steward)', and Mr. llieatt (Sunday School) Elocutionary and vocal items were rendered by Mrs. Clegg and Messrs. S. Clegg find J. Edleston, and a duet was given by Mrs. Coupland and Mrs. J. Edleston. Mrs. Hieatt was the accompanist. Mr. Jordan also addressed the meeting. Supper was served by the ladies.
The members of the Te Puke Lyceum C\ub entertained Mrs. Mcßae at a farewell afternoon in the club rooms this week. Mrs. Lemon, the president of the club, received the guests wearing a frock of brown crepe de chine with straw hat to tone. Mrs. Mcßae wore green figured crepe de chine with a green hat. On behalf of members the president presetted Mrs. Mcßae with a charming bronze bowl. A motor-car competition was won by Mrs. Mcßae. Those present ' were:—Mesdames J. Ball, J. Todd, A. Diprose, Bi. Now that summer is at an end the croquet clubs are reluctantly closing their greens till next season. On Tuesday the members o:: the Devonport Croquet Olub spent the whole of the day on the Ijiwns playing progressive croquet. Prizes were given by Mrs. Swan and Mrs. Lacy, ar Jj* were won by Mrs. Shortt, Mrs. v/ampbell, Mrs. R. /I)uder and Mrs. Craigmile. Luncheon and afternoon tea were served in the pavilion, where the tables were decorated with brass bowls of dahlias and asters. Among those present were. Mrs. Crow (president), Mrs. Spicer (secretary), Mrs. Swan, Mrs. R. Duder, Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Ellisdon, Mrs. Palairet, Mrs. Vaile, Mrs. Lacy, Mrs. King, Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Shortt, Mrs. D. Harvey, Mrs. Herron, Mrs. Lydford, Mrs. Craigmile, Mrs. McLean,-Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Angove, Miss Marks, Miss Burtcn and Miss Duder.
A new girls' club, "St. Peter's ileur de Lys,'' lias been formed recently in connection with St. Peter's Anglican Church at Takapuna, and last evening members held their opening dance in the Parish Hall. Guests of honour were members of the Boys' Club. The club has taken for its motto " faith, Hope and Charity in Service," and its objects are both social and educational. Lectures V'ill be given during -the winter months, fl'ifl in the near future it has been decided to produce plays. 1 here was a jaige attendance at last evening's gathering and dance music was provided by Miss Sunday Mowbray.
