DRAINING AT AKA AKA.
Sir, —In the Herat.T) of Thursday there was an article on the above works from a Herald representative, and on perusing same I think it creates a wrong impression about the Aka Aka land. Firstly, the unemployed are not digging drains, but only widening and deepening existing drains, and as for being in water waist deep, there is no occasion for that if the work is carried out in a proper manner by only going into the drains at low water (these drains being tidal). Secondly, your representative speaks of the water-logged plain. The land is not water logged, and I can speak without fear of contradiction, that this land is, on the moment, among the most fertile land in New Zealand, and that tho unemployed are not draining one yard of swamp land, but only opening up existing drains to cope with the heavy rain water from the watershed at the top end of the plain and to get the flow out to the river as quickly as possible. Aka Aka. Thomas M. Robertson.
