GANDHI'S PORTRAIT.

REJECTION BY ACADEMY.

EX-AUCKLANDER'S WORK

(Received April 21, 11.25 p.m.) LONDON, April 21

A portrait of Gandhi, painted by Captain Oswald Birley, formerly of Auckland, New Zealand, when the Mahatma was in London last year, has been rejected by the Council of the Royal Academy as undesirable for the Academy's forthcoming summer exhibition. The council declares that the rejection is not actuated by political motives, but is due to the fact that this portrait is the least important of three Captain Birley offered for this year's exhibition. The other two have been accepted. They are portraits of Lord Irwin and Sir Robert Wilt.

Captain Oswald Birley was born in Auckland on March 31. 1880. He went to England as a boy and was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He studied art subsequently at Dresden and Paris. He is a medallist of the Paris Salon and a member of tho Royal Portrait Society and similar organisations.
