BULLET STRIKES TRAM.

HOLE PIERCED IN WINDOW.

CONDUCTOR'S NARROW ESCAPE.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON", Thursday.

While a city-bound tramcar was proceeding down Adelaide Road this evening a missile, presumed" to be a bullet, struck and pierced a window and the conductor, who -was standing near it, had a, narrow escape, glass splinters falling close to him. The bullet struck the window of the rear saloon or control compartment, the only occupant of which was the conductor. If a shot was fired, the discharge of the weapon was drowned by the noise of the moving tram. The conductor, who was on his fee', heard the. sharp crack of i the missile on impact with the glass and saw splinters fly. The hole corresponded approximately to that, which would be made by a. .22 calilire bullet. The opposite pane showed no sign of damage, but this window was partly open and it is presumed the bullet flew through the gap. Detectives searched the compartment when the tram reached the despatch office but nothing of assistance in the investigation was found.
