NOTES ON THE FORM.

DEFEAT OF INFLATION, LA MODERNE'S CONSISTENCY/ GOLD DAWN WELL BEATEN. [bi TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]' PALMERSTON FORTH, Thursday. Easterly -scored her second hurdles win at the Manawatu meeting in first-class etyle to-day. She was rignt back early, but smothered the loaders tt the finish, to win narrowly, but decisively Arrowhead was always going well in behind the leaders and was unlucky in bring unable to make the best of an opening on the rails. His form was an improvement on that of tlio first day. Balloon had every chance, but ho just failed.' Royal Lineage was prominent, but fenced badly more than once. Royal Hunting led nil tlio way in tho hack sprint. Royal Bengal, Lady Court and Orby s Choice came at him in the mm home, but ho held on to score well from .Royal Bengal, who stuck on just too well for Lady Court. OrbyY Choice was a handy fourth, followed by Pollock, Beaconsfield, Lady Ronald and Pass On. Royal Hunting was always going like, a winner. Royal Bengal ran a good sound race, and finished solidly. Orby'n Choice had every chance. Speedmint's Lucky Run. Spcedmint got a good run on the rails throughout in the Taniatete Handicap and, the leaders edging out on the straight, eho. just snatched a victory. Jayson and Arikira v.cre left at the start. Arrow Lad led into the straight with Joie de Val, while crowding close were Statuary, Chopin, Gold Lawn, High Falut-in* and Speedmint. Arrow Lad wa3 beaten befors they were properly in line and he edged out, giving Speedmint her chance. Speedmint just squeezed homo from Chopin, with S'atuary, Joie de Val and High Falutin' close up. Then came Shrewd, Arrow Lad and Gold Dawn. Speed--mint was lucky to get the run she did, but she won well. Chopi:i, Statuary, Joie de Val and High Falutii:' all ran good races, but Gold Dawn was soundly beaten. Pomp won all the May in the open seven furlongs event. He ran with great dash. Rational 11. came from the middle of the field and Richfield fro;n further back. Equitant was a handy fourth, with Atholspear and Winsome .Hind next. Rational 11. ran another solid race, bat Pomp ran on too well for him. Richlield showed improvement. "Winsome Hind was well up to the straight, where she looked a possibility, but she then drifted and finished 6ixth. The Manawatu Stakes. Inflation, the favourite for the Manawatu Stakes, was a certainty beaten through being chopped back when endeavouring to get up on the rails in the straight. He had no other tilterna'.ive if lie were to get up. and bad luck slopped him. Golden Wings and Autopay set a fast pace" from Fiji. La Moderne, Inflation and Farmer. Goldeu Wings drew out from this buuch on the turn and led into the straight from Autopay, La Moderne, Fiji and Inflation. La Moderne hpd the race won 50yds. off the post and finished too stoutly for Golden Wings. Inflation came again after hi 3 check and headed off Autopay .for third. Then came Farmer. Esteem and Fiji. La Moderne has teen a very consistent performer all the Benson, and she deserved her success, although it was undoubtedly at. tho expense of her stable-mate Inflation. Golden Wings and Autopay were stopping at the finish, but they rail good races. La Moderne is the first two-year-old winner of the race since Kiosk, six years ago. An inquiry was held into Inflation's check, but no action was taken. Headmaster, although drawn 1G at the post in the Nursery Handicap, began as well a3 anything, quickly gained the lead, and was never afterwards in danger of defeat. Speed followed him to tlio straight, but he had no clianee with Headmaster, and eventually went uud< r for second place to a good late run by Late Jest. Gay Song was well up fourth. Fleeting Glance, who was handy at the finish, was right back early, but came home very fast. Fairway, the favourite for the Adderstone Handicap, ran well, but lie was decisively

defeated by Seneschal, who lay handy throughout. Seneschal paid a good price. Air Laddie just failed to reach Fairway. Lyrical, the pacemaker, was a, good fourth, and thou came .A'ttsntive and Capetown. Nothing had any chance with Seneschal at the finish.

Kaihoro nSjd Aston made the pace in. the Telegraph Handicap, with Lady Quex and Arisus in behind. Once into the straight Arisus came away and won very easily, Hunt the Slivper aid Cimabue came from the back, and in :l desperate finish for second place there -was only a head between them. Ivaihoro was fourth, with Lady Quex right up. Great Star was well enough placed to win, but never looked likely.
