PROTECTION FROM FIRE.
OTAHUHU BRIGADE S AREA. DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL. A recommendation that the Otahuhu Brigade should not provide fire protection for the municipal abattoir at Westfield was adopted by the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that this decision was influenced by the other firms at Westfield not desiring protection, and the council's previous resolution not to allow the brigade to attend fires outside the borough boundaries, excepting part of the reticulated area of the Manukau County. Pending definite arrangements being made with the Manukau Cnnty Council for the protection of the whole of its reticulated area, the council agreed to continue its present service, for an annual fee of £4O and firemen's fees.
It was decided to purchase a chemical engine at a cost of £75. The chairman of the committee reported that the, total fire loss in the borough last year amounted to £6l. Satisfaction was expressed with this exceptionally low figure, which, it. was stated, reflected the high efficiency of the brigade.
