TAXATION BURDEN.
COMMENT IN THE PRESS. COUNTRY DISAPPOINTED. NO REMISSION GRANTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received April 20, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 20. Newspaper editorials on the Budget all voice the country's disappointment that there is no remission of taxation, but they say they recognise the Government's difficulties and hope its financial measures will lead to better times. The Morning Post says the Budget is even sterner than the least hopeful prophets anticipated. The Times says it is a hard Budget based neither on vague optimism nor clever, dishonest stratagems. Moreover, Mr. Chamberlain has clone a thing unprecedented for a number of years—given a genuino sinking fund entailing a debt redemption of £32,000,000, which is small but creditable.
The only passage in Mr. Chamherlain's speech which was cheered by all parts of the House was his almost perfunctory reference to economy, in which he said that apart from the Ministry of Labour vote only £14,000,000 was saved.
