AMALGAMATION QUESTION.
The Birkenhead Borough Council motlast evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presiding. The Birke, head School Committee conveyed the opinion that the amalgamation of Birkenhead and North cote was greatly to be desirer, although very careful investigation of details would need to be made befow t.he proposal was gi\en effect to.
The. district engineer of the Public Works Department advised that the claim of the council for £45 in connection with wa ?es subsidy under the Birkenhead relief of unemployment loan, 1930, could not bp entertained. The Mayor said the council had an arrangement with the Government to subsidise wages on the basis of 14s a day. This subsidy was paid for a while, but was subsequently reduced to a basis of 12s 6d a day, although the council had not paid less than 14s to borough employees. It was a breach of U ith. It was resolved to request Mr. IL G. R. Mason to take the matter up*
