COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

THE AUCKLAND BRANCH. Various matters of interest were dealt with at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, held last evening. Miss E. Melville, president, presided. A letter was read from Mrs. Higgins, wife of General Higgins. head of the Salvation Army, thanking the council for its letter of welcome to her on her arrival in Auckland. Miss Melville read a report of proceedings at tho conference of the executive which was held in Wellington on Easter Monday and to which she was a delegate. Miss Rishworth reported for tho subcommittee that had been set up to go into the matter of the increased charges in connection with St. Helen's Hospital and the Mental Hospital, and to ascertain whether these charges caused increased hardships. The sub-committee had made exhaustive inquiries into both matters, but as other issues were opened up it was decided to refer tho report back to the executive for that body to frame a resolution to submit to tho council for its next meeting. At tho close of the business section of the meeting Miss Vera Hay gave an interesting address upon women's activities.
