THERMAL ACTIVITY.
WHAKAREWAREWA GEYSERS. TWO PLAY SIMULTANEOUSLY. FiNE SIGHT FOR VISITORS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COIUIESrONDENT.] * ROTORUA, Monday. An usual display of thermal activity was witnessed ' at. Whakarewarewa to-day when the Pohutu geyser, after a period of quietude for the past four months, sent up a, magnificent shot estimated at about. 90ft., and continued playing for about half an hour. Almost simultaneously with the activity of Pohutu, the Prince of Wales geyser, which is near by, also became active, and the two geysers ■were playing at the same time. The sun shining on the large column of boiling water and steam gave an awe-inspiring and beautiful effect, which will long be remembered by the visitors who were fortunate enough to witness a sight, which, according to the older guides, has not occurred for many years past. It has been usual for the Prince of Wales geyser to play som<? time before Pohutu and it was considered a sign that the larger geyser Mas about to become active. The Maoris were quite excited when their favourite geyser asain became active, for the last, period of sustained activity was between September and December last year. Waikite and Waikorohihi geysers continue to be very active, and have also been playing to-day.
