LIQUOR AT BELLAMY'S.
Sir, —I have read with interest separate letters appearing in your issue ot the I.3th inst., ever tho signatures of A. D. Hamilton and 11. E. Vaile. I am of the opinion that views put forward in these letters are held by the majority of tho electors. While it will be generally agreed that our Government should have the moral support of the country in its endeavour to get out of its present difficulties, it must also be considered that it. should set an example in economy. We read of an overwhelming majority in favour of liquor at Bellamy's in a ballot taken by Parl.ament recently. I venture the opinion that if a vote of the electors could be taken tho result would be an overwhelming majority in favour of closing Bellamy s down—temporarily at least. llow is it possible to reconcile the expenditure of £IO,OOO per annum on Bellamy's with
tho cut.in the old age pensions? lam not a prohibitionist by any means, but api of the opinion that the affairs of the Dominion would receive more and better attention without Bellamy's. My loyal support is given to the present Government, but I would be better satisfied that my support is not being misplaced if 1 saw it giving a lead in economy. The medicine served out to us, which I agree is necessary to restore our country to a healthy condition, would bo easier to take if the Government set us a better example. J. Armstrong. Opotiki.
