SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
DIVERSION OF REVENUE. PROTEST IN TARANAKI. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The complete unanimity of opinion of the people of Taranaki on the question of the Opaku Reserve and the Taranaki Scholarship Fund was again evidenced when a conference of representatives of .educational institutions and local bodies, together with the members of Parliament for the province, was held at Stratford on Saturday afternoon. No less than 33 bodies were represented. After a lengthy discussion the followMg resolution was carried unanimously:— That this conference representative of a 'l sections of the community in Taranaki, emphatically protests against effect being 6J v en to the' recommendation of the National Expenditure Commission that the Opaku Reserve should be abolished &nd that the accumulated hinds and future revenue should be diverted to the Consolidated Fund. In answer to the Commission's statement that the income from the Scholarship Fun:l has been more than sufficient o provide for the scholarships required, this conference points out that the accumulation of the fund has been due mainly 0 the failure of the New Zealand University Senate to ii iterpret properly and o carry out the provisions of the Act in he past, and to adopt the proposals of e education authorities of Taranaki that ..he-scope of the scholarship should be Widened and the number increased."
