LADY HOUSTON'S OFFER.
CHANCELLOR DECLINES GIFT. (lieceivcd April 17. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 10. The Chancellor of the .Exchequer, Mr. Seville Chamberlain, lias replied to Lady Houston's offer of £160,000 more than is due fror a her income tax. Ho said Parliament alone was in a. position to allocate the resources of the Exchequer to any particular object. Therefore it was impossible to accept gifts ior expenditure on particular scrv;ces. .However, he appreciated the spirit which prompted Lady Houston to make the offer.
