WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Hobsonville.—The monthly meeting of the institute was held recently. After the remits were discussed a demonstration of silk lampshade-making, and a rug made from silk stockings was given by Mrs. Parry. The best jar of jam or jelly was won by Mrs. Osborne and an "ago competition bv Miss G. Sinton. The roll call was " The Sound that Annoys Me Most." Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. W. Ockleston.
ITukaterc. —At the April meeting of the ITukatere-Tinopai Institute, a library for tho use of members was instituted, members bringing one or more books with which to start it. Mrs. Hall was appointed librarian, with Misses J. and M. Hall to assist. A competition. "Something New from Something Old," resulted in a fine display of useful and ingenious articles, Mrs. Bourne being the winner. The newly-clected secretary and treasurer was Miss Mayall, with Miss Robson as assistant.
Otakiri. —Remits to the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Federation were discussed at a meeting of the Otakiri Institute: Mrs. Le. Lievre, of Edgccumbe, spoke of the urgent need for funds for the Plunket Society, and a committee was formed to arrange a dance to be held in tho Otakiri Hall, in aid of the society's funds. During the afternoon, Mr. Marks, of Whakatanc, gave a talk oti '"1 he Rules of tho Road." In the potato-growing competition, Mrs. Jamieson was first with 231b. 14oz. Tea was served by tho hostesses. Papamoa.—After business and correspondence had been dealt with at a meeting of tho institute, delegates gave an interesting report of tho annual conference of tho Bay of Plenty Federation. The afternoon's programme was opened with a song rendered by Mrs. Reid. Mesdanics Jones, Ishcrwood, Christian, O'Ncil, and Miss Jordon ('J'auranga members), were welcomed. Mrs. Christian gavo an address on the life of Helen Keller, and later gave a song. A demonstration of rug making by Mrs. O'Neil was closely followed. A competition, best article from one yard of cretonne, was won as follows: —Mrs. R. McNaughton first, Lli's. Lees second, Miss Morton third. The bring and buy mot with a splendid response. Hostesses wero Mrs. Bear and Mrs. Collins.
To Awamutu.—At a recent meeting of the To Awamutu Institute an enjoyable programme of entertainment was arranged and a competition held. Tea was served by Mcsdames J. Ryan and W. McKcnzio.
To Hoe.—An enjoyable picnic was organised recently by tlio members of the institute. The parents and children of the district were conveyed to tho Waiknre Lake by the courtesy of Messrs. W. and C. Thompson and W. D. Patten. At the meeting held in the library on Wednesday it, was decided to hold a court at the forthcoming Waiknto Winter Show and arrangements were made for a birthday party to be held in tho ball next month. A musical competition, arranged by Miss Baucke, and recitations by Miss Lo Heron were enjoyed. Waipu.—At a meeting of the institute Mrs. J. C. McLennan gave a pianoforte .solo, and a saxophone solo by M.ss Hall was enjoyed. Mrs. A. W. McKay read an interesting paper on "Scalds and Burns." Great amusement was caused by the impromptu speeches, and after ted several of the members entertained with a charade. The hostesses were Mesdames Maisey, Grant, Moreland and Baxter*
