FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
THE POLITICAL SITUATION. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 18, 1882: Mr. Whitaker has been sent for and Sir George Grey is returning to Auckland in the Hinemoa. A memorandum was furnished to the Press Association giving a narrative of the crisis, and apparently this has been drawn—up on His Excellency's instructions. The statements made in this narrative the Ministers flatly contradict. The delay which took place between the announcement that His Excellency had sent for Sir George Grey, and the arrival of that gentleman in Auckland, had the effect of enabling the press to express its opinion as to His Excellency's procedure. That opinion almost unanimously condemned the step as mischievous, unprecedent and utterly unwarrantable. Our native policy, which was becoming acknowledged, has been paralysed. The Maoris were beginning to feel that the power which was ruling them just and merciful and consistent, and would not be hunibugged. The Maoris will be induced by the suggestion of Sir George Grey's return to power to b®* lieve that there is a possibility.of going back to the good old days. Parnell, during his stay in Paris, looks paler and thinner than when he fir® entered Kilmainham. He has declined to accept any political demonstrations in "is favour.
A large meeting of unemployed was held at Trafalgar Square at which.reso' u " tions were carried urging upon the Government the necessity of providing means for assisted emigration to the colonies.
