THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.
QUIET SATURDAY CALL. Quiet but steady conditions prevailed on the Auckland Stock Exchange at the single call on Saturday morning. Only one transaction was recorded. Government loans held firm at the stronger levels, offers of £94 being again forthcoming for 1938 and 1939 4£ per cent, bonds and stock and £97 5s was still available for 1937 63 per cent, issues. The only supplies of the lines mentioned placed on offer were 1938 per cent, stock, for which £95 was asked. The bank section was easy and offers for Australasias and Nationals of New Zealand shaded. New Zealands were done unaltered at 43s 3d, after which support eased 3d on tho previous day's level to 42s 9J. In insurance New Zealands were sought at weaker levels, but buyers continued to offer 48s for South British, which were made available 3d cheaper at, 49s 3d.
There were no important movements in other sections.

AUSTRALIAN WINES. BETTER v ENGLISH DEMAND. (Received April 17, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 16. The Board of Trade returns for March again furnished evidence of the increasing demand for Australian wines. Although tho total importations of wine from foreign countries in March only totalled 621,712 gallons, compared with 1.104,615 gallons in March, 1931, wines from tho British Empire lose from 292,968 gallons in March, 1931, to 508,041 gallons last month. Australia was chiefly responsible for the rise with an increase from 216.327 gallons to 390,137 gallons.
