VELVET CAKE.

Take lib. sugar, lib. flour, Alb. butter, four eggs, one tcacupful cold water, one teaspoonful cream of tartar, half teaspoonful carbonate soda. Dissolve the soda in water, sift the cream of tartar into flour, beat the sugar and butter to a cream, add tho flour and water, stirring well. Next add the eggs, well beaten. 1' lavour with a few drops of essence of lemon. Beat all together for three minutes and bake one hour.
