GARDEN PARTY.

FUNCTION AT MANUREWA.

A most enjoyable garden party was held in connection with St. Luke's Parish Church, at the home, in Hill Road, Alanurewa, of Mr. and Airs. F. H. Barnard, The residence is admirably suited to such an occasion. It is set on a hill in attractive grounds, which are almost surrounded by puriri trees, and looking across tho township of Alanurewa, glimpses of the distant sea may 1)3 obtained. In spite of several showers during the afternoon, a splendid gathering resulted, and several attractive stalls and side-shows did good business. Tho proceedings were opened by Canon C. H. Grant Cowan. The Rev. Frank Dobson, vicar of Alanurewa,' thanked Canon Grant Cowan for his presence, and also Air. and Airs. Barnard for the use of their house and grounds. Air. Barnard, in responding, said how necessary it was for each one to do what he could to help the church onward at the present lime. Under a tree on the lawn a mystery booth proved a great attraction. '1 wo dancing displays were given by pupils of Aliss Gaynor Maxwell, on the lawn in front of* the house. Afternoon tea was served in the drawing room and on the verandah, which were tastefully decorated by Airs. Barnard, and tho Bible Class girls. A nail-driving competition was won by Airs. C. 11. Crispe, and tho tennis tournament by Aliss do Carteret. Aliss Ilanna was the winner of a Black Orpington cockerel, and a cake, given by Airs. Barnard, was won by Aliss Cummings. The stall-holders were as follows: —Cakes and sweets, Alcsdames Ward, H. R. Lupton and Robertson; jumble stall, Mesdaines Ayling and Whitton; bran tub, Misses Rodgers and Gillard; pony rides, Mr. Ayling; naildriving, Air. George Wood.
