POOR RELIEF IN BRITAIN. EUROPE AND UNITED STATES. LONDON. April 7. The minister of Labour. Sir Henry Betterton, stated in the House of Commons to-day that 1,220,000 men. women and children in England and Wales at present are receiving poor relief, compared with 1,005,000 at the end of September. The registered number of unemployed in Britain on March 31 was 2,531,000. The corresponding figure in Franca was 343,000, which it was understood represented only a small proportion of the unemployed in that country. Germany 8 figure was 6,129.000 The estimate of the American Federation of Labour of the wholly unemployed in the United States in February was 8,300,000.
