£IOOO FOR AUCKLANDER. NEW SOUTH WALES DRAW. (Received April 8, 8.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 8. The second prize of £IOOO in the 46th New South Wales State lottery has been won by Mr. E. Grant, of A\ ellesley Street, Auckland. Exhaustive inquiries in Wellesley Street were made last evening, but failed to elicit any information concerning Mr. Grant. BRITISH BILL SHELVED. BETTING AND SWEEPSTAKES. COMMISSION CONTEMPLATED. (Received April 8. 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY. April 7. The Government, has intimated that itcannot give facilities for the State lotteries Bill which recently was introduced as a private member's measure, by Sir William Davison (Conservative —South Kensington) on March 22 and received first reading. The reason is that all private members' time has been taken and therefore there is no chance of the bill making further progress this session. The. appointment, of a Royal Commission to make a comprehensive survey of the. laws relating to sweepstakes and lot teries was announced in the House of Commons to-day by the Home Secretary. Sir Herbert Samuel. He said it was generally agreed that, serious difficulties existed in the way of enforcing the present law. Events in the. last, two years had brought this to the. notice of the authorities and the public. There were difficulties in connection with the enforcement of the law relating to street betting and the totnlisator, and from time to time new developments arose, such as betting on motor-cycle racing and on greyhounds. 'I he Government had decided to consider whether any amendment to the present law was needed and steps would be taken for the appointment of a commission with wide terms of reference as soon as possible.
