FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. ILL-HEALTH OF PREMIER. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 8, 1882: It may be expected that in 3 few days the Premier, Mr. Hall, will tender bis resignation to the Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon. No differences have taken place among Ministers, nor has there been any other cause for Mr. Hall's resolve to re * tire from office than the impaired state of his health. We confidently assume that he will be replaced by Major Atkinson. Taranaki iron-sand appears to be attracting a good deal of attention outside New Zealand at present. The New mouth Harbour Board has received applications from England and Sydney f° r leases of the sea beach, the object being to erect smelting works and manufactories. The Auckland whaler Especulndor has called at Norfolk Island, our correspondent reports, and it has taken 70 ban of sperm oil since leaving New Zealan . During the vessel's slay two cncke matches were played between a team 0 15 Melanesians and one of 11 Norfolkeis, descendants of the Pitcairners. Honour were even. The round-arm bowling 0 one of the Melanesians wis admired, a also was Forty Buffet's under arm.
