NEW WINTER GAME.
vf.ry interesting. If you want a new winter game to play sitting round the table, try this one. Father and mother may like to join. Rule ou, a number of squares like a crossword puzzle, but having no black ones. Each player in turn pencils any letter of t ie alphabet in any unoccupied square, points being counted by the player whoso letter is the completing one to any word, whether reading across or downward. A woi'd of two letters counts (wo points: a three-letter word, three points, and so on. Words of one letter do not, count. If by inserting a letter anywhere in a group a word can lie made to read across and another to read downward, points for both are counted.
For example, suppose that in a ccilain portion of the lined area, the grouping shown in the illustration here has gradually appeared, if the next player places an " M " in the top left-hand square lie scores 4 points, having completed j,he word " Mate." By placing "B " instead of " IM," however, 7 points would he secured (Hat 3 and Bone, downward, 4); while " D " would yield 8 (Date 4, Done 4). Following that, the next player may score 4 by completing together " .An " and "0:i " with the let ter " N," but could have made 5 by placing " .S " after " Date " to make the word dates. So you score by improving on any other word, whether your own or an opponent's, and as the whole area gradually becomes doited with little groups of letters it will be found that some of these can be linked up to form fresh and often quite unexpected words. Ct.rcfi.l recording of points by a scorer is essential, and when every square has been fil'ed the player with the highest number is the winner.
