"JOY OF A GARDEN."

PRIZE-WINNING ESSAYS. So high was the standard of the essays submitted in tho above contest that it was an extremely hard matter to make a selection for the prize-list, even although there was generous allowance for consolation prizes of packets of seeds. Tho two prizes of five-shilling packets of seeds have been awarded to: VIVIENNE GREY, 20, Boltoa Street, Wellington. BOYD HEMPHILL, Te Puke. Consolation Prizes: Nora Shipman, Whangarei; Kathleen Odev, Whakamarama; Batliia Luttrell, Waimana; Nancy Brockinan, Taupaki; Ada Woods, Oicvedon ; Hazel Smith, Maungaturoto, Lucy Fyers, Rangiriri. Highly Commended: Dorothy Bramloy. Jonn Savill, gravis Arniilajio. Olive McCrao. B. Butlierford, Eunice Paul, Gvenyth Evans, Joan Cooper. Ethel Miinro, Barbara Wurriner, Mnrjorie Cooper. Thclnia Hopkins. Maude latton, Olive Hyde, Phyllis Branson. It was a real joy to road over so many fino essays, all breathing the very spirit of the truo garden-lover, and, as I read of the brave efforts of my fellow gardeners to subdue all pests, of their disappointments after unceasing ellort, I iclt that tho troubles I myself have experienced, and which have seemed so disheartening, aro inevitably shared by all who try to make a garden. And there are at least some afflictions which others bear which lam spared! Ono young writer told how tho cows and calves had destroyed a part of her garden, and only this week I received a letter fvom a dear ohl lady who lives far away down in South Westland. Sho showed me all over her garden one day when the weather was ton bad for mo to continue my trip into tho mountains, and now she has written to say that not long ago, a, whole flock of mischievous kcas came down from the mountains, pulled all her young plants from the ground, and tore them to pieces! "I wouldn't have minded so much if they had eaten them." sho wrote, " but they just destroyed the plants from sheer mischief." So you see there arc still a few trials and tribulations which we Northern garden-lovers have been spared! In tho last list of donations for my " (Sarden-Lovers Corner," I omitted to mention a parcel of bulbs from W. Tl., Now Lynn. There were very acceptable, and I extend my thanks to this anonymous friend. Good luck to all prize-winners in our contests, and may you have much happiness in planting and watching the little seeds I have sent! I think it would be a good idea for you to plant the seedlings in a little special corner like I have done, and have a little "Herald Corner" in your own gardens.
