Community singing followed j and afternoon tea was served at the close ! of the meeting. | The new lona College al Havelnek I North, which has been erected to replace the building destroyed by the earthquake, has now been officially reopened after a full year's interruption in its work. The girls attending the college at the time of the disaster were later scattered throughout, various other schools in ihe. Dominion, but a pleasingly largo number of them have returned lo continue their studies at the new lona. The, new building cost between £7OOO and £BOOO. and was built, from the original plans and as an exact copy of the old I school.
The Women's Progressive Club of thy Y.W.C.A. held an enjoyable social on Thursday in honour of Mrs. Brown, who is shoit.lv leaving for the Islands. A bouquet and presentation was given by Miss Benthnm to Mrs. L'obson, who has lesigned from office as secretary after three vears' service. Suitable speeches were made by the president and old members. Some most enjoyable items were rendered as follows:—Pianoforte solos by Miss Tui Pearsons, Messrs. Craik and Forrest; songs and dances, Miss Avis Arthur; elocutionary items, Mrs. Barclay; solos, Messrs. Dickens and Walker. Supper was served by the committee.
Adverse weather conditions did not deter many members of the local branch of the Mothers' Union from being present at the first meeting of the season held in the Parish Hall, Otalmhu, on Thursday afternoon. The president. Mrs. TL J. Stanton, welcomed the ladies and introduced the speaker, Mrs. E. Maguire. who chose for Iter subject
"Thrift." Excellent advice as to ways and means of overcoming the difficulties of the times was given by the speaker. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Maguire, after which afternoon tea was served by a committee, of ladies, including Mesdames W. G. Woods, E. .Jones, W. Payne. Allan Box and W. Jamicson.
There was a very good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the St. Mary's branch of the Mothers' buiou held on Wednesday afternoon. After a short, service in the Cathedral, membcis adjourned |o the parish hall where afternoon tea was served. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mrs. \\ . Eaiicourt (reelected); vice-presidents, Mrs. Mac Murray and Mrs. W. .1, Simpkin; treasurer. Mrs. Ward; secretary, Mrs. L. T. Xorthcroft: committee, Mrsdames Adams. Mason, Murray, Hunt, H. Kissling, Garlick. Dawson, and F. Eitchett. Canon W. Faneourt presided at the meeting. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. G. Coats and Mrs. faneourt in their illness, and hopes were expressed that they would soon be among them again. Mrs. F. Eitchett was welcomed on her return from an overseas visit.
The members ol I lie L'ocky Nook ( roquet Club spent a, very enjoyable afternoon on Wednesday when they were, entertained by the president, Mrs. Matthews. Progressive croquet was played, the winners being:—-(A) Mrs. Thompson (B) Mrs. E. Turner; hidden numbers, Mrs. Han is. Miss Halliwell. Tea was served in the pavilion, the tables having been decorated in the, club colours of silver and green. Mrs. Matthews filtered the club's congratulations to Mrs. Thomson, Mrs. Colo and .Mrs. Pcckham on their success in Ihe recent croquet tournament. Mrs. Wilson (vice-president) presented Mrs. Matthews with a handsome bouquet on behalf of the club members. Among those present were Mesdames Matthews, Cole, Thomson, Peckham, Hyde, Wilson. Tongue, Wakerley, Barton. Keatlev, Kayes, Harris, Turner, Bulledge. Curtin, Ilaile. McAneney. Preston. Garland, Page, Hodgson. Wvles. Maiden. McGill. Bow (Jen, 11. Turner, Urquhart.
