DANGEROUS DOGS.
THRE.E PERSONS BITTEN. ALSATIAN OWNERS FINED. ONE ANIMAL TO BE DESTROYED Two owners of Alsatian dogs, Arthur James Scott and' Eric Lawrence Jacob, were charged in the Police Court yesterday with having dangerous dogs in their possession. The case against Jacob, who pleaded guilty, was heard first. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that on February 25 defendant's dog rushed at a cyclist, Trevor Gregory, and bit him on the calf of the leg. The incident occurred in Jesmond Terrace, Mount Albert. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, ordered Jacob to pay £1 4s expenses. No fine was imposed, as the dog was stated to be now under proper control. Three charges of possessing dangerous dogs were brought against Scott, but only one was admitted. Mr. Kelly said that on March 5, at Thome's Beach, Takapuna, Mr. Anthony C. Green was bitten on the thigh by one of defendant's dogs. "There is practically an uprising in Takapuna over this dog and we have had several complaints about the animal," added Mr. Kelly. "Defendant was fined in January for being the owner of this dog." Counsel said defendant had taken every precaution to keep control of the dog, which had now been sent to Onehunga.
The Magistrate: The Onohunga people will be pleased. Evidence was given by Leslie Clyde Hinton, a telegraph messenger, who said that on February 19' he was walking along Thome's Beach when another dog, also owned by Scott, attacked him. Witness was bitten on the thigh.
Constable Wood, of Takapuna, said defendant's property was not large enough to provide adequate exercise for Alsatian dogs. As a result the dogs roamed about the beaches and roads. "Your client is not able to control dogs; he had better keep rabbits instead," remarked the magistrate to defendant's counsel. On the first chargo Scott was fined £2 and costs, £1 2s, and the dog was ordered to be destroyed. The second charge was adjourned for a fortnight, defendant being instructed to either give away his dog, or destroy it. No evidence was offered on the remaining charge, which was withdrawn.
