£20,000 FOR A RECTORY.

PROPOSAL IN SYDNEY. EQUAL TO £BSO A YEAR. Publication of details of the proposal to spend £20,000 on the erection of a rectory for St. James's Church, King Street, Sydney, has aroused some comment. The correspondent of tho Arguii says:—" City men seem to regard it an an extraordinary amount to be so ex* l pended. It is, of course, the Church's business to do as it pleases with its money, said one, and no individual looking on has any rights in the matter, but one cannot help wondering whether there is not a mistake somewhere. For £20,000, even at 4 per cent., means a rental of £3OO a year. There will be no rates or taxes, but insurance and upkeep may be put down at £SO at least, so that the rental would ba £BSO. In these times ono never knows when a rate or tax may bo imposed." The principal reason for the expenditure may bo that the dioceso of Sydney, received" £30,000 on account of resumption of tho old rectory. The special committee dealing with, the matter has to think further of tho project., and it will not bo able to say until April just what course should bo followed.
